Growing Together in Order to Form a More Perfect Union

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

The work to form a more perfect Union continues. If you have been on social media recently, you may be disheartened to learn that many citizens disgruntled about how their state or the country is run are indicating that they will not be celebrating the Fourth of July this year. Many who disagree with recent court rulings are encouraging protests. I shake my head.

The United States may have its flaws, but still it ranks as one of the most desirable countries to live. For the most part, we are a nation of immigrants who strive to achieve what is described in the Constitution of the United States.

As I write this letter, I have been reminded of the hope and promise that our country brings to so many. As many of you know, I have been packing up my home preparing for a move to Waco, Texas, this week. One of the things that I was considering not taking to Texas with me is a TV that is 18 years old and weighs as much as I do! Sacramento, like many cities around the country, has taken in refugees, many of which are sleeping in apartments with little or nothing to their name. A friend told me about a local church working with some of these refugees. I went with her recently to deliver the TV, stand, and movies to kids who literally jumped with joy as they were being introduced to classic children movies. Their sincere gratitude, their love of freedom, and their wish to find a job of their choosing made me see our country through a different lens. This was a story I had heard before from my own Irish family members who had immigrated to America. The hope for a better life endures.

The Constitution. Never more meaningful. Never more important. Never more powerful. Never more true. Celebrate the spirit of America. God Bless the USA and have a Happy Fourth of July!
