Biography

Nathan joined the Marine Corps when he was 21 and knew very little about anything related to joining. He went along for the ride and was placed as a Finance Technician in Camp Pendleton, California where he did four years and met his wife. His wife stayed in for 12 years total and they lived in Okinawa, Japan for a while and then off to Ohio. He watched the Okinawans farm and then studied Horticulture in Ohio at Kent State.

"The FVC has helped me by allowing me to market with the Homegrown by Heroes stickers, but the grant and resources I have received helped me upgrade my infrastructure and allowed me to expand certain areas on the farm. This has lessened the work load for me to assist with my Veteran disabilities while allowing growth."

Coufal Produce grows fresh nutrient-dense produce. They grow a variety of vegetables, herbs, and mushrooms that sell to local Farmers' Markets and restaurants.

Nathan grew up on a small farm with livestock and alfalfa so he was already a country boy. After moving from place to place and city to city, he needed the nice peacefulness of the country. He wanted to learn more about growing real food and feeding his community and family.

"What I am doing is truly feeding the people in my community. There are no bad Slogans such as 'Feed America' with corn syrup and soybean oil. I am providing truly healthy and nutritious to my local community and hoping to push the importance of locally sustained food, not food from other nations."
