The origins of Ortman Farms arose from humble beginnings starting with the purchase of 166 acres of land by Mr. Loren Ortman in 1977. This transaction took place in the dead of winter in snow covered Upstate New York. Loren had the foresight to see the possibilities that a piece of land and a steady resolve can have in making his childhood dream of owning a farm a reality. Loren was inspired by his grandparents' farm and always had a love for the land. He initially balanced being a farmer with his full time job as a newspaper foreman in New Jersey.
Ortman Farms was established in 1981 as a small vegetable, sheep, and replacement heifer farm. With his wife Cynthia by his side they raised their three children on the farm. When the opportunity emerged for Loren to make a career move and transition into being a dairy farmer full time Loren and Cynthia took a huge leap of faith, heading into new territory with their three children. On January 16, 1999 Ortman Farms progressed to become a full time dairy farm.
Initially starting out with only nine dairy cows, Loren used two pail units and a dumping station to collect the milk. A very proud accomplishment was when Loren and Cynthia sent out their first load of milk at a respectful 950 lbs. Two decades later Ortman Farms has grown the dairy herd to 74 milking cows with an average at 7,500 lbs, a great leap from that first shipment the family proudly sent off! In 2016 the decision was made to develop a beef herd to supply pasture and grain fed meat directly to the consumer. Ortman Farms has now expanded to include dairy, beef, pork, lumber and cropping.
With the transition of their son Michael becoming the sole owner of Ortman Dairy, LLC in 2019, Ortman Farms is the embodiment of a family farm and family run business.
