Scott is a 20-year Air Force retiree that entered service in 2004 as a Cyber Transport Technician. Over the course of his career, he has served in a variety of operational and leadership roles, with assignments in Colorado, Illinois, and Alaska, as well as overseas tours in Iceland, Italy, and Germany. He also completed a deployment to North Africa in support of Joint Special Operations Command missions. His professional experience includes serving as the Manager of Base Information Technology Infrastructure for the Cyberspace CapabilitiesCenter, where he was responsible for overseeing critical communications systems supporting global operations. Additionally, he was selected for two highly competitive, selectively manned assignments: Senior Systems Administrator for the 485th Intelligence Squadron at the National Security Agency, and Configuration Management Noncommissioned Officer in Charge for Communications Squadron West at the National Reconnaissance Office. Scott finished his career with the Defense Information Systems Agency as the Air Force Senior Communications Engineer for the State of Alaska.
"Throughout my 20-year military career, I developed expertise in leadership, systems management, operational planning, and accountability in high-stakes environment, skills that directly translate to managing complex agricultural operations and building a resilient farm business."
"The Farmer Veteran Coalition has provided my farm with access to exclusive farm grants, marketing tools, business resources and a community of fellow veterans who understood the challenges of starting a farm after military service."
Through FVC, programs like Homegrown By Heroes label has helped the farm grow visibility and connect with customers who value veteran-owned agriculture. Their support has helped the farm continue building a sustainable, grass-based multi-species farm focused on rotational grazing and direct-to-consumer food production.
"Beyond the financial and educational support, the Farmer Veteran Coalition reminded us that we are part of a larger mission of veterans continuing to serve their communities through agriculture. The organization has helped strengthen our confidence, expand our opportunities, and move us closer to creating a successful family farm that can support future generations."
Enlisted Roots is a veteran-owned, species diversified farm focused on sustainable, grass-based livestock production and direct-to-consumer sales. The operation follows a regenerative model emphasizing rotational grazing, soil health improvement, and humane animal management. Rather than relying on a single commodity, the farm integrates multiple enterprises to spread risk, improve cash flow, and maximize land productivity. Products are marketed locally through direct sales, allowing for stronger customer relationships and greater control over pricing. By combining practical farming experience, sound business management, and proven regenerative practices, Enlisted Roots is designed to be both economically resilient and environmentally responsible while supporting the local food system and community.
Agriculture has always been part of Scott's life. He grew up on his family’s farm in Oregon and learned early the value of hard work, responsibility, and caring for livestock and the land. During his 20-year Air Force career, he always knew he wanted to return to the farm.
"After retiring from the military, agriculture gave me a way to continue serving in a different capacity, by producing quality food for my community and building something meaningful for my family. Farming also provided a sense of purpose and connection that felt familiar to the teamwork, discipline, and mission-focused mindset I experienced in the military."
Starting Enlisted Roots allowed Scott and his wife to combine their passion for sustainable agriculture with their desire to create a family-centered lifestyle. They were especially drawn to rotational grazing and grass-based farming practices that prioritize animal welfare, soil health, and stewardship of the land. For him, transitioning into agriculture was not just a career change, it was a return to his roots and an opportunity to build a lasting legacy for future generations.
"Farming carries over my sense of service by allowing me to provide something essential to my community, quality food raised with integrity. During my 20 year career in the Air Force, service meant supporting and protecting my fellow airmen. Today, that same mindset carries over into agriculture through hard work, stewardship of the land, and helping feed families in our community."
