The 147th Cattle Raisers Convention, hosted by the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA), convened in Fort Worth last month, attracting over 4,300 attendees from across the Southwest. The event featured an agenda including industry updates, educational sessions, and networking opportunities.

As a member of TSCRA’s Natural Resources & Wildlife Committee there was plenty to learn and provide feedback on. This committee addresses a broad range of issues, including federal and state water laws, conservation practices, invasive species control, prescribed burn programs, wildlife management, and sustainability initiatives.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins was in attendance and emphasized her commitment to supporting American farmers and ranchers through fair trade policies and disaster relief efforts. She highlighted the administration’s plan to deliver $40 billion in emergency aid to agricultural producers affected by recent natural disasters. The Secretary also reaffirmed her dedication to being “a Secretary for all agriculture,” pledging to advocate for both traditional and renewable energy sources, including biofuels, to bolster rural economies and ensure energy independence.

The central theme of the convention was sustainability in the beef industry. A panel titled “The Business of Sustainability: Strengthening Beef’s Future Through Industry Partnerships” included representatives from Costco, McDonald’s, and Nestlé. Moderated by TSCRA Natural Resources & Wildlife Committee Chair James Clement III, the discussion focused on collaborative efforts to enhance the resilience and quality of the beef supply chain. Topics included carbon offset programs, biodiversity, water resource management, and the financial incentives associated with sustainable practices.

The convention also addressed critical industry topics such as agricultural policy, market outlooks, and weather forecasts. Notable speakers included U.S. Representative August Pfluger and former House Agriculture Committee Chair Mike Conaway, who provided legislative updates pertinent to cattle raisers.

In addition to the educational opportunities, the convention featured live demonstrations, student competitions, and an expo with over 290 exhibitor booths, offering attendees hands-on experiences and insights into the latest industry innovations. The Farmer Veteran Coalition was an exhibitor this year, sharing information regarding our mission, as well as disaster relief and recovery information.

Leadership transitions were a significant part of the business meetings. Carl Ray Polk Jr. was elected as the new TSCRA President, with Stephen Diebel and Dan Gattis appointed as first and second Vice Presidents, respectively. New members were also elected to the board of directors and executive committee.

The convention recognized excellence within the industry through awards. Rex and Susan McCloy of Blue Ranch received the 2024 Texas Outstanding Rangeland Stewardship Award for their exemplary land management practices. Additionally, Dale Rankin was honored as the 2024 Outstanding County Extension Agent – Beef, acknowledging his contributions to beef education and outreach.

I am looking forward to attending the summer meeting in June in San Antonio, where I am sure property rights and water will be a top priority.
