Organic Career Network (OCN) Cohort Experience: This internship is funded by the Organic Career Network (OCN), a national initiative dedicated to developing the next generation of leaders in organic agriculture. As an OCN-supported intern, participants join a select cohort of peers placed across organizations in the organic sector, gaining access to a broader professional network and shared learning experience. Interns are expected to attend four virtual cohort sessions throughout the internship, featuring facilitated discussions, guest speakers, and career-focused programming. This cohort model enhances the internship by providing structured opportunities for connection, mentorship, and deeper engagement with the organic movement. Position Overview The Organic Urban Agriculture Internship provides hands-on experience in sustainable urban agriculture, community food systems, and nonprofit agricultural programming. Interns will support educational programming and seasonal growing activities that help increase community access to organically grown food and deepen public understanding of sustainable agriculture practices. This internship emphasizes the relationship between organic farming, environmental stewardship, food justice, and community wellness within an urban nonprofit setting. Interns will participate in foundational farm activities such as soil preparation, composting, planting, crop maintenance, harvesting, and post-harvest handling while learning how ecological growing practices contribute to resilient local food systems. In addition to agricultural learning, interns will support community-based programming through volunteer activities, workshops, food distribution efforts, and educational events. These experiences are designed to provide exposure to how nonprofit farms operate as centers for education, community engagement, and public health support. Throughout the internship, participants will gain transferable skills in sustainable agriculture, program support, volunteer coordination, and community-based food systems work. Knowledge & Skills Expected to be Gained:Agricultural technical skills (core organic farming practices such as soil preparation, composting, planting, crop maintenance, integrated pest management, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. Seasonal crop planning and basic farm systems for sustainable production.Exposure to community engagement, including supporting workshops, volunteer coordination, and educational programming- key components of many small-scale and nonprofit farm operations. Compensation & Qualifications: Compensation is $15 per hour for undergraduate interns and $18 for graduate interns, not to exceed a total of $2,250/undergraduate or $2,700/graduate per semester. Interns are not eligible for benefits. This internship is hybrid remote, so a reliable internet connection is required.
